KUALA LUMPUR: A group of environmentalist calling themselves "Kelab Pencinta Alam Tasik Pandan Perdana" have expressed displeasure at Teratai assemblyman Jenice Lee for taking credit for their hard work.
The group, comprising avid joggers and Tai Chi enthusiasts, said Lee had, in a Chinese newspaper report last month, claimed she had taken the effort to maintain and upgrade the park.
At a Press conference this morning, club chairman Tong Man Yin said they had spent about RM300,000 since 2006 on the park's upkeep.
"We had asked Lee for allocations previously, but she told us to get money from Pandan MP Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat."
Tong said the lake area of the club was privately owned and members had, put their money and energy towards upgrading the previously neglected park.
Tong said Lee claimed in the news report that the club no longer had funds to maintain the park and was "dying".
Tong refuted them, saying that the club's account had a steady credit flow of RM20,000 every month. He said the club organised eight to 12 major activities a year, including annual dinners and festive day celebrations.
"We don't need her here. Although she is the assemblyman for the area, her statements are very misleading and unbecoming of a leader."
Pandan Wanita MCA chief Cindy Leong, who was also at the Press conference, said it was irresponsible of Lee, who is from DAP, to take credit for other people's hard work. "She does not portray herself well as the people's representative by making such a claim."
