PANDAN (Oct 6, 2010): MCA members who really love their party must sincerely want their party be reformed to remain relevant to Malaysians, especially the Chinese community.
“The times have changed. More than 60 years ago, the MCA was founded with a purpose for the community.
“That purpose cannot be the same today. Evolution cannot be denied and the only way for MCA to survive politically is to really endear itself to its members and Malaysians with inclusiveness,” Pandan MP Dato Sri Ong Tee Keat told OTK’s Info Unit in an online interview from Taiwan today.
Ong was asked to comment on the MCA presidential council and central committee’s decision on Tuesday (Oct 5, 2010) that direct party elections could not be implemented next year due to time constraints. “If there is a will, there is a way. If there is sincerity in wanting inclusiveness and there is respect for all MCA members, leaders must go for direct elections.
That way, the party will be guided by the true majority of all party members, not just delegates who merely constitute a fraction of the entire membership,” he said.
Ong said if Umno and PKR could implement direct party elections, “why can’t MCA?”
“MCA will emerge stronger internally and externally when direct party elections are implemented because there would be less room for political manipulation and money politics then,” he added.
“I believe dedicated MCA members are keen to play their role responsibly in determining the party’s destiny. So, let them have their say and be participative in reinventing the party,” Ong said.
“Mere political rhetoric and manoeuvrings to serve any personal or factional agenda would only expedite the decadence and ultimate demise of the party,” he lamented.
